The Legend of Selkia Point

The wind was blowing wild, as the waves crashed violently on the rocks.
On this particular April day, I found myself alone, far away from the docks.
I stood in silence and awe on the sandy shores, watching the dense fog roll in.
Unsure of how I came to be here - was this real, or simply a dream I’d wondered in?

The eerie beach was deserted, and I felt alone as the air stung with an icy cool.
That’s when I heard the faint call of a siren, coming from some secret hidden pool.
I came upon a lithe creature with milky, glowing skin; her hair was wild and fiery red.
My pulse suddenly quickened in horror, and my skin tingled with an uneasy dread.

Never had such a fantastical sight been seen before, and surely never survived.
I was both in awe and terror of this magical creature, wondering how long I’d stay alive.
Tales of the oceans legendary mermaids and sirens had travelled far across the world.
But never had I laid eyes on a mermaid, let alone hear her sultry siren’s call.

“Be not afraid,” she said in her intoxicating voice, her face as beautiful as could be.
“For I am Selkia the mermaid, the guardian of the deep and the keeper of sea”
“Why am I here?” I heard myself ask this creature, in a nervous crackled voice.
“You are here to warn others,” she said, “to know that you always have a choice.”

“Please I don’t understand, Your Majesty, what choices are there for me to find?”
“You have the choice to save the planet and spread this message to all humankind.”
“What message would you have me deliver my siren? Of what help can I possibly be?”
“Let people know to be kind to each other,” she said, “and to respect the land sea”.

“Tell people not to discard things in our ocean - the sea is meant only for true treasure.
By keeping the land and sea pure, humankind will find their greatest joy and pleasure.
For when your old and dying, filled with regret and longing for your youth once more.
Won’t you wish your legacy had incited change, inspiring future generations to explore?”

“By caring for our planet, you can ensure life exists peacefully above and below the sea.
Heed this warning I beg of you - share it with others, and you’ll be as happy as can be.”
“I will, Your Majesty,” I vowed, “I’ll spread the word for all to hear, both far and countrywide.

I will be your humble earthly messenger, and I thank you for being my majestic guide.”

And with that, she smiled and disappeared beneath the ocean’s deep and vast blue.
Never did I see her again, but I vowed to keep my promise - I vowed to always be true.
So, if you find yourself lost and alone one day and you hear the sirens faint call.
Don’t be afraid to seek out Selkia the mermaid, hidden among the tides and ocean shore.

For when you finally see her in all beauty and glory, you will no doubt understand.
That her message is both pure and simple - offering hope and love for our oceans and land.

So, heed her warning wisely, let your friends, family and great grandchildren know.
That we need to care for our special planet and oceans to help future generations grow.
